Helen Jane Castle

Castle, Helen Jane – Passed peacefully on February 19, 2019. Born into the Newman family of Carroll’s Corner, she met Charles (Vernon) Castle before the Second World War.

They married and had their first child, Wayne, before Vernon went overseas. He returned safely and they built a home in Carroll’s Corner where they raised their family of six. Except for a few memorable years in Port Hawkesbury, Helen could always be found at home in Carroll’s Corner where she gardened, cooked, baked, did yoga, knit, danced and celebrated birthdays and anniversaries with her family.

Helen lived a healthy lifestyle and always looked younger than her years. She was happy and content in the home she and Vernon created, which grew with their family. She was active throughout her life, and in her 90’s called herself “lazy” for slowing down. Always light-hearted, she enjoyed her 96th birthday with her family in January. Helen travelled across Canada, to Ontario and British Columbia, and to England and Europe and visited gardens wherever she went. She was a member of Gays River United Church and the Women’s Auxiliary of Shubenacadie Legion.

Our loving thoughts are with her – her sister, June and brother, Glen; her children, Chuck (Mary), Greg (Judy), Debbie (David), Glen (Ann) and Susan (Vernon); her grandchildren, Dewayne, Belinda, Freddie, Laurie, Catherine, Victoria, Melissa, Gregory, Tena, Mark; and great-grandchildren, Mary Jane, Brittany, Justin, Glenda, Ty, Carter, Violet, John, Elizabeth, Paige, Sam; and great great-grandchild, Ella Mae.

She was ever grateful for her caring companions who helped her stay in her home during her last days: Cindy Toney, her daughters, Debbie and Sue, Earth Angels (Truro) and Continuing Care (Northwood). Sincere thanks from the family to the Palliative Care team of Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their supportive, understanding care.

Cremation has taken place. Service will be held in Gays River United Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 23rd, followed by a get-together downstairs. Flowers welcome. Donations may be made to Gays River United Church or a charity of choice. And please plant flowers or a tree in her memory – she will smile on seeing it.

Kenneth Ross Arnold

Arnold, Kenneth Ross – Age 80, East Jeddore, passed away February 16, 2019 at home. Born in East Jeddore, he was a son of the late Henry and Eva Arnold.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Shirley Jean Arnold; stepchildren, Lisa (Leonard) Knight, Annette and James; step grandchildren, Felisha, Spencer and Victoria; step great-grandchildren, Christopher, Sierra and Abbigale, who he loved very much. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The last member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by sisters, Ella, Mabel, Violet Pearl, Beatrice, Jerine, Lydia, Sabina; brothers, Ernest, Spencer, Howard, Frank, Herbert and Charles.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 20, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Jeddore United Baptist Church, Head of Jeddore, with Pastor Aubrey Deslatte officiating. Burial will be at a later date in East Jeddore Cemetery. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Chapter, or to Shirley.

Michael Edward Maynard Arnold

Arnold, Michael Edward Maynard – Age 69, East Jeddore, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2019 at home. Born in East Jeddore, he was a son of the late Norman and Velma (Mitchell) Arnold.

Michael had been employed with the Canadian Coast Guard for 31 years, where he served on the CCS Alert and CCS Terry Fox.

Surviving are siblings, Russell (Janette), twin sister, Marlene (John) Jennex, Samuel (Verna), Daniel (Helen), Hiram (Phyllis), James, Peter, Elvona, Gabriel (Holly), Jesse, Joel, Gideon (Beverley); several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in East Jeddore Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to East Jeddore Cemetery.

Walter Ivan Clark

Clark, Walter Ivan – Age 86, of Truro, and formerly of Kingston, Ont., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Walter was born in Upper Musquodoboit, a son of the late George and Thelma (Redden) Clark.

Walter was well known in Truro as baker and owner of Walter’s Pastry prior to moving to Ontario.

He is survived by immediate family, daughter, Elizabeth; son, Darrell (Sandy), daughter-in-law, Shirley; grandchildren, Cecelia, Camilla, Leanna, Brad; chosen granddaughter, Shelley; great-grandsons, Lachlan and Angus; extended family, Kathy, Sharon, Vicky (Jim), Bobbie, Jackie, Walter; sisters, Marie, Linda (George); brothers, Carl (Jackie), Leo (Cathy), Lloyd, Robin; half-brother, Sandy. Castle, Jerry Lorne – Age 71 of Wittenburg, passed away February 10, 2019 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Carrolls Corner, he was a son of the late Jack and Shirley Castle.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Helena (McCully); sons, Andrew (Tosha), Hilden; Edward (Nancy), Stewiacke; daughter, Rachel (Danny) Flynn, Truro; grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Jarrett, Sabrina, Marissa, Cohen, Hope; great-granddaughter, Rory; brothers, Donald (Marjorie), Chaswood; Lee (Marilyn), Fletchers Lake; Phil (Darlene), New Glasgow; Perry, Middle Musquodoboit; sisters, Marion Wilcox and Kay Williams, both of Dartmouth. He was predeceased by brother, Alvin; sister-in-law, Dolores; brother-in-law, Leonard Wilcox.

Ivan Robert Jeffers

Jeffers, Ivan Robert – Of Elderbank. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ivan, on February 9, 2019, at age 91. Born in Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Charles and Josephine (Goodwin) Jeffers.

At age eight, he moved to Elderbank with his family where he later made his home and raised his own family. Farming was a way of life and he continued to milk a cow until two years ago. There were always a variety of cattle in the pasture – Texas Longhorns, Scottish Highlands, Herefords and a team of oxen from time to time. His love of horses lasted a lifetime, always having at least one in the barn. He loved going to exhibitions and connecting with his horse friends.

As a school bus driver for 35 years, many kids crossed his path. The janitor’s lunch room was a source of many stories and jokes. Ivan loved life, worked hard, enjoyed all the people he met, and was very proud of his family. He instilled morals and life skills in each of the children, sometimes giving advice when one may not necessarily want it at that particular time. Listening to fiddle music and dancing was something he and Bertha enjoyed together.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha (Mitchell); children, Sheila (Joe Fisher), Ray (Daniela Savelkoul), Cheryl (Lee Johnson), Carolyn (Stephen Fudge); grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Fisher, Emily (Will Jackson), Jessica, Kathleen and Craig Johnson, Ruby Fudge; great-grandchildren, Elaina, Elizabeth and Landen Fisher; sister, Alberta Woodworth; and chosen brother, Ronnie (Janice) Cleveland.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ivan’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 12th, from 2-4 p.m., in Meagher’s Grant Community Hall. Bring your stories and memories to share. George Emery Molnar

Molnar, George Emery – Age 80 of Lantz, passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2019, with his family by his side. Born and raised in Nadasd, Hungary, he was a son of the late Sandor and Maria (Zabo) Molnar.

Upon his arrival in Canada in 1958, he had several jobs such as milkman, Ben’s Bread delivery man, ice cream truck driver. He worked as a labourer when the Halifax Shopping Centre was being built and later took his welding trade. He worked for many years at the Halifax Shipyards as a welder and later established Molnar Welding which is still run by his son Winston and family.

Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Marie Preeper; daughter, Elizabeth Molnar (Frank Salazar); sons, Alexander (Pamella), Stephen (Anne), Winston (Crystal), Jason (Sally); nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sisters, Maria Horath, Ilonka Simon. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 13 at 1 p.m. in Gays River United Church, with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Stuart Arthur Gibb

Gibb, Stuart Arthur – of Truro. Our beloved Stuart passed away on February 1, 2019 after a life filled with love and laughter. He was born in Winnipeg in 1950, adopting Nova Scotia in 1975. A gardener and horticulturist, Stuart studied at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and remained there for the rest of his career, including as manager of the grounds and greenhouses, and instructor in plant use and identification. After retiring, Stuart gave his time as a volunteer in the horticulture program at Nova Institution.

Stuart was an accomplished choir singer, a longtime member of the Truro Cantabile Singers, an early member of the Halifax Camerata Singers and also participated in local choirs at both Immaculate Conception and First Baptist Churches in Truro. Later in life, he joined New Horizons Band Truro as a saxophonist. His love of music was matched by his desire to share laughter with fellow musicians.

Stuart was loved for his gentle nature. He shared freely his kindness, patience and quick wit. Stuart was also a lifelong learner, interested in history, science and space. His time was filled with quiet dog walks, model trains and projects in his workshop. He enjoyed working on crosswords under the sun at the cottage on Prince Edward Island.

Stuart celebrated 35 years of marriage in 2018 with his wife, Sarah Macdonald. He will be forever remembered by his wife, Sarah; children, Duncan Mathew (Marianne Lafon) and Ian David (Andrea Robinson); and by his brother, David (Brigitte) Gibb; nieces, Penny, Theresa and Rebecca. He joined the Macdonald family through marriage and will be mourned by David and Susan Macdonald, Nancy and Allen Marr, Teresa and Robert Wilkie, Chris Macdonald, Andrew Macdonald and Yvette Serroul; his nieces and nephews, Mark and Matthew Macdonald, Caitlin Marr, Mary Clare and Patrick Wilkie and Ethan Macdonald. He was predeceased by parents, John and Margaret (Isherwood) and his nephew, Alex Marr. Stuart’s family was always first in his heart.

Our family is grateful for the excellent care Stuart received from medical professionals at Colchester East Hants Health Centre and in Halifax. We will never forget your many kindnesses.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral will be held on Thursday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. in First United Church, 711 Prince St., Truro, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stuart’s name to Colchester Food Bank, Colchester East Hants Hospice Society or Nova Scotia SPCA.

Frederick “Graham” Loughead

Loughead, Frederick “Graham” – Beloved husband of the late Patricia Loughead, died peacefully surrounded by his family, in Debert Court, on January 30, 2019, at the age of 83. Born in Beaver Brook, he was a son of the late Robert and Verna Loughead.

Graham worked for the family business, Loughead’s Transport, for several years, then opened Loughead Express with his brother, Reg. He went on to open G. Loughead Services and North American Van Lines with his wife, Pat, which included delivering groceries to local seniors for over 30 years. A devoted participant of the community, he was a member of Old Barns United Church. Graham loved spending time at the VON Adult Day Program for the past couple of years.

Graham is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Steve) Fredette, Colleyville, TX; Carol (Stephan) Reale, East Greenwich, RI; Cathie (Bob) Landsburg, Truro; Christa (Gary) Giddens, Lower Truro; niece, Vicki (Troy) Colford, Valley. Graham is also survived by his greatest blessings, his grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Nicole and Kayla Giddens, Rachael and Egan Reale, Suzanne, Tricia and Patrick Landsburg, Talia and Jaime Fredette, Kylie and Keenan Colford; great-grandchildren, Evan, Ryan and Katelyn Cooper; brothers, Reg and his wife, Gerry; Wayne (Vicki); several nieces and nephews. Graham was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia; granddaughter, Lindsay Giddens; brothers, Parker and Donald.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Graham’s life will be held on Saturday, February 2nd, at 2 p.m., in Old Barns United Church, with Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in the church. Interment will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VON Adult Day Program.

Eva Mae Marks

Marks, Eva Mae – It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Eva Mae (Nauffts) Marks, Ship Harbour on January 27, 2019, at the age of 86. Born in Spanish Ship Bay, she was a daughter of Minnie (Spears) and Captain Ronald Nauffts.

Eva is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Douglas; her children, Linda (Peter), Cathy (Wayne deceased), Ronald (Rhonda), Myretta (John D), Frank (Karen); grandchildren, Hollie (Ryan), Jeff (Robyn), Elspeth (Jacob), Chrissie (Eddie), David (Charnell), JD (Maria), Keaton, MacKenzie; great-grandchildren, Myla, Cleo, Maeve, Nolan, Duncan, Max, Everette; sisters-in-law, Elva (Bob), Janetta (Lloyd deceased); many nieces and nephews. She was the last of a family of seven siblings, Douglas, Albion, Roderick, Edgar, Bruce and Pamela.

Eva was a devoted member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church and enjoyed meetings of the Ship Harbour Stitch Club. She loved family gatherings, gardening, quilting, and many trips with her husband and family. Eva was a “doer”, always busy and willing to help. She worked at several jobs throughout her life time, retiring from Twin Oaks Hospital after 17 years of service.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday, February 1 from 6-8 p.m. in Ship Harbour Community Hall, and funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, with Rev. Andrew Mortimer officiating. A reception will follow in the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Anglican Church.

Bryan Arnold Busby

Busby, Bryan Arnold – Age 79 of Brookfield, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 25, 2019. Born in Armstrong, B.C., he was the only son of the late Arnold and Dorothy (Meniece) Busby.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rose (Archibald); daughter, Michelle (Pat) Walton; sons, Michael (Carol Bernard), Corey (Cindy James); grandchildren, Erica (Mike Manuel), Mitchell and Cameron Busby; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Maxwell Manuel; sister, Margaret; several nieces and nephews.

Bryan met Rose in Calgary when his mother played matchmaker and introduced him to her young East Coast boarder, who just happened to share the same birthday. Rose and Bryan married in 1960 and Dad joined the Zellers management program. Soon their young family was transferred to Nova Scotia, and over the next 15 years they would move many times between Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, finally settling in Brookfield. He would continue his career at T.S. Patillo’s, Rustcraft, A.J. Walker’s, and retired from Home Hardware at the age of 75.

Bryan loved spending time at the camp with his sons, and stories abound from their seasonal escapades. Even though he was tone deaf and couldn’t sing a note, he taught himself how to play the piano and any stringed instrument he picked up. Dad enjoyed a good drink of rum and would want us all to raise a glass and toast his good life.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 1, beginning at 3 p.m., in Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex, Seniors Centre Room, 55 Carter Road, Brookfield. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Kemptown Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.

Carl Wayne Skinner

Skinner, Carl Wayne – Age 71 of Milford, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late James and Reta (Murphy) Skinner.

Carl served in the RCAF, Trenton, Ont., where he travelled extensively. After retiring from the RCAF, he went to work for Shaw Group (Lantz Brick), was a broker for Remax, Enfield, and worked for Air Canada, Halifax Airport, until retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan (Spares); sons, Tony, Enfield; Jason (Tammy) Milford; grandchildren, Jessie, Milford; Paige, Tyler; great-grandson, Hunter, all of Brandon, Man.; brother, Jim, Truro. He was predeceased by brothers, Douglas, Kenneth; sister, Kathryn.

Howard David Streatch

Streatch, Howard David – Age 84 of Meaghers Grant. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard David Streatch on January 21, 2019. Born in Meaghers Grant, he was a son of the late Stanley and Marjorie Streatch.

Howard and Rose fostered more than 50 children. He drove a sod truck for MVQS for more than 25 years. Howard enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Left to mourn are his daughters, Cathy (Garth), Sheila (Garland Sr.); grandchildren, Natasha (Kyle), Draper (Marie), Garland Jr.; great-grandchildren, Colten, Titan and Dyson; brothers, George (Zelda), Sandy (Anne); sisters, Kay (Bud), Jeannie (Lewis); many nieces and nephews; and dear-to-his-heart foster child, Josh Graham. He was predeceased by his wife, Rose; brothers, Ray and Jack.

Kenneth Owen MacKenzie

MacKenzie, Kenneth Owen – Age 73, of Enfield, passed away January 12, 2019, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit, following a long struggle with cancer. Born in Meaghers Grant, he was a son of the late Owen and Florence MacKenzie.

Kenneth will always be remembered for his infectious smile, joke telling, his love of dancing and horses.

Surviving are his daughters, Angela MacKenzie, New Glasgow; Anita (John) Pickup, Middle Musquodoboit; Trina Sampson, Enfield; grandchildren, Laura Pickup, Christian Sampson, Holly Smith, Danielle Sampson, Micheala Shannon; siblings, Ross (Mary), Eileen Myers, Carol (Rob) Vatcher, Linda Deale (Kirk), Donnie (Leanne), Ronnie (Sheila), Barbie MacKenzie, Donna (Paul) Elliott; many nieces and nephews. Alice Leona Neily

Neily, Alice Leona – Age 82 of Cooks Brook, passed away January 12, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in South Tetagouche, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Reginald and Ida Smith.

Alice enjoyed listening to country music, whether a live concert or John playing the guitar. She enjoyed feeding the birds, and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving are husband, John; son, Terry (Judy) Rodgers; daughters, Sally McMullen (Rocky Johnson), Judy (Steve) Millett; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Sydney Smith (Wanda Ellis); sisters, Cora Smith, Eva Murphy, Jessie (Floyd) Williston. She was predeceased by daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mark Jonah; grandson, Brian Jonah; brothers, Carmen, Johnny, Norman; sisters, Helen, Eunice, Sadie.

Visitation will be Thursday, 12:30-1:45 p.m., with funeral service at 2 p.m., all in Carrolls Corner Community Centre. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Stanley Russell “Papa” Betts

Betts, Stanley Russell “Papa” – Age 75, of Porters Lake, died peacefully on January 10, 2019, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, with family by his side. Stanley was born and raised in New Glasgow, married and eventually settled in Porters Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Yvonne “Bonnie” Coulet, daughter, Pamela (Dave) Rothwell; son, Stanley Jr. (Tina May); granddaughter, Ashley Rothwell (Nathan Dennis); great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn, four sisters; and one brother. He was predeceased by his parents, and two sisters.

He was proud of his trade as a machinist/fitter, working his career life at DND Halifax. He was a quiet kind-hearted man who enjoyed the outdoor life, fishing and hunting. He appreciated his time with family on camping trips and at the family cottage. He spent his retirement years with family and friends, making his woodworking projects, time at the pool and gardening. Stan and Bonnie had many adventures during their various trips down south. Stan also enjoyed a good party with country music and dancing with Bonnie and a cozy campfire. 

All are welcome to the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16th, in St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 3293 Highway 7, Lake Echo.  Refreshments will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Parks Canada or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the health care workers of 6A Centennial Building and Twin Oaks Hospital for their kindness and support.

Margaret Rose Stewart

Stewart, Margaret Rose – Age 80, of Meaghers Grant, passed away January 8, 2019, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Meaghers Grant, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Hurley) Dickie.

Margaret loved gardening in the flower beds, baking and always had a soft spot for the family cat.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will always be missed by daughter, Ellen (Roger); granddaughter, Brittany (Chris); daughter-in-law, Paula (Jim); great-grandchildren, Mia and Max; sister, Ella; brothers, Walter and Hal. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy; son, James; siblings, Jean, Murray, Everett and Willis.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Margaret’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Canada or a local SPCA.

Vernon Harold Boutilier

Boutilier, Vernon Harold – Age 90 of Stewiacke. We regret to announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Vernon Harold Boutilier on January 4, 2019, of natural causes. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest of seven children.

In his time, Vernon worked with Maritime Furriers, on the Halifax waterfront as a stevedore, as a milkman, and with NSLC from where he retired.

Vernon enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, hockey, darts, playing guitar (especially Bluegrass) and camping. He was a member of a Bluegrass band “The Renegades” who played locally for many years. Numerous summers were spent with his wife Geraldine, camping at the Bluegrass Festivals and at Lake Ainslie in Cape Breton, where he often gave other campers the gift of his music around their campfires.

Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine; sons, Larry (Marilyn) and Alan (Debbie); brothers, Wayne (Gail), Kenny (Judy), Arnold; grandchildren, Lisa, Zoe (Seth Radunsky), Sarah, Shawn (Donna) and Nick (Stephanie); eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Jenny; son, Bruce; sisters, Joan Little, Betty; brother, Donnie.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A graveside service will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Kenneth Carroll Adams

Adams, Kenneth Carroll – Age 76 of Dartmouth, passed away January 2, 2019, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Samuel and Barbara (MacNeil) Adams.

He had been employed with CN in the trucking division, the Chronicle Herald, and with the Commissionaires. Kenneth was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Scott (Cathy); daughters, Tracey Swinimer, Michelle (John) Terrio; grandchildren, Riley, Emma, Jamie, David, Johnny, Joseph, Jack; great-granddaughters, Kiara, Clara; brothers, Jack (Lucy), Kim (Lisa Tucker), Don (Theresa), Steve (Wendy); sisters, Dayle (Joe) Lewin, Daryl Adams; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Lois Perry; brothers, George and Roy; son-in-law, James Swinimer.

Visitation will be Friday, 6-8 p.m., and funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m., both in New Hope Baptist Church, 11 Everette Street, Dartmouth, Pastor Chris Blinder officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 11 Everette Street, Dartmouth, NS B2W 1G2.
