Nelson Stewart Dauphinee

Dauphinee, Nelson Stewart – Age 90 of Lantz, passed away November 14, 2018, in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax, where he had been a resident for 12 years. Born in Lower Tantallon, he was a son of the late Harold and Mary (Romans) Dauphinee.

Nelson retired from Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel after 22 years of employment. He had a keen sense of humour and enjoyed hunting. After retiring, he could often be found in the woods picking wildflowers for the ladies in the neighbourhood. He enjoyed being in nature, life in general, and particularly being with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, the former Florence Caddell; children, David, Dartmouth; Gail Fillion (Steve Swinimer), Nine Mile River; Kitty (Blaine) Miller, Crystal (John) Ashley, both of Elmsdale; Twila Dauphinee, Nine Mile River; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sisters, Edna (Gordon) Deman, Elmsdale; Ethel Deman, Belnan. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Morgan Ashley; sister, Esther Fancy; brothers, Art, Don, Ralph.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. No visitation or funeral service by request. Memorial donations to Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Natalie Dawn Hibbitts

Hibbitts, Natalie Dawn – Age 43, of Shubenacadie, passed away November 13, 2018, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of Robert Hibbitts and the late Maxine (Lively) Hibbitts.

Natalie spent 22 years employed with Dexter Construction in traffic division. She made many friends and was well-respected as a confidante and mentor both at work and home. Natalie was a warm and generous person who gave every part of her being to the people around her and her job. Her kind spirit and loving nature will always be remembered and missed by her loving partner, Donnie Greenough; sisters, Brenda, Bobbi, and Stephanie; nephew, Michael; niece, Lauren; great-nieces, Phoenix and Iris; aunt, Jo Ann (Dexter) Dowell. She was predeceased by her grandmothers; cousin, Joey; and Karen, the Thelma to her Louise.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be Sunday, at 2 p.m., in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Fall River, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Interment will be at a later date in West Gore Cemetery. Memorial donations to Fundy Veterinarians Ltd., or any organization which helps children would be appreciated.

Scott Stuart Graham

Graham, Scott Stuart – Age 93 of Eastville, passed away November 13, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Pembroke, he was a son of the late George and Minerva Graham.

Scott was a farmer, logger and millworker for many years. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone. His kind ways will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, the former Rhoda Dickie; sons, Lewis (Francene), Ivan (Deborah); grandchildren, Andrew (Krystal), Evan (Jessie), Matthew (Sarah), Janet (Robert); great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Carter, Cassius, Tristan, Scotia Lynn. He was predeceased by brothers, Walter, Philip; sisters, Marie, Annie.

No visitation by request. Funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Springside United Church, Springside, Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date in Eastville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Eastville Cemetery.

James William Swinimer

Swinimer, James William – Age 54, of Dartmouth, passed away November 11, 2018, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of James Swinimer and the late Joan (Clarke) Swinimer.

James was an avid volunteer for the MS Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He was a proud father, and one of his greatest moments was to see both of his sons graduate. James could be seen around town riding his mobility scooter. In August, he drove his scooter from Lunenburg to Halifax, fundraising for MS and Leukemia and Lymphoma.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his wife, Tracey (Adams); sons, Jamie and David; brothers, Peter (Alexandra), Dana (Lorrie Conrad); sisters, Jo-Anne (George) Oxtoby, Tanya (Keith Turple); several nieces and nephews. Besides his mother, he was predeceased by his brother, Michael.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be held Friday, November 16th, at 6 p.m., in New Hope Baptist Church, 11 Everette Street, Dartmouth, with Pastor Chris Blinder officiating. Family flowers only. Lloyd Edwin Nauffts

Nauffts, Lloyd Edwin – Age 79 of Truro. It is with deep sadness that Lloyd’s family announces his passing on November 1, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a son of the late Fred and Pearl Nauffts.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Valerie; daughters, Darlene, Dartmouth, and Joanne (Danny) Wellwood, Lantz; granddaughters, Ashley Wellwood, N.W.T., and Samantha Wellwood, Halifax; brother, Donald (May), Calgary; and sister, Carol (Nelson) Miller, Fall River. He also leaves behind brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Bertha Wiswell, Lake Echo; David and Joan Wiswell, Truro; Gail and Tom Davis, Gays River; Paul Wiswell, Tatamagouche; Mike and Cindy Wiswell, Mount Uniacke; Wayne and Bridget Wiswell, Rawdon; Terry Noiles, Bedford; Tony and Donna Wiswell, New Brunswick; Danny Wiswell, Bedford; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lloyd was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed travelling, camping, relished talking about politics and always enjoyed a good joke. He will be lovingly and forever missed.

The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors who gave all their special care and support.

Luke Reginald Scothorn - Funeral Announcement

Scothorn, Luke Reginald – Age 22 of Hardwoodlands. It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we must tell you of the unexpected death of our son, Luke Scothorn, on October 21, 2018. Born in Truro, and proudly raised in Hardwoodlands, he was the son of Paul and Theresa Scothorn.

Besides his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Peter VanTol “Opa” and Nancy Lee Scothorn; maternal grandmother, Carol Turpel; aunt, Tina Scothorn; uncle, John Turpel; cousin and “special sister”, Lydia; paternal great-grandmother, Jean Scothorn; goddaughter, Leah; many extended family members who were a part of his daily life. He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, Reginald Scothorn; maternal grandfather, John Turpel “Gramps”.

Luke was an extremely proud dairy farmer and loved all aspects of the farming industry. Spending most of his days on the farm, he had a vast wealth of knowledge and experience at the age of 22. Luke loved to bring people together; whether it was a hunting or fishing trip, or a party in the woods, Luke enjoyed people and people enjoyed Luke. He was a dynamic, unique, old soul who would do anything for anyone. He enjoyed classic rock music for the message, which resonated for him. Family, friends and community were very important to Luke and he had a voice that he was not afraid to use. He was a non-conformist, and a genuine, kind-hearted, fun-loving, compassionate individual.

In keeping with Luke’s agricultural roots, his family would like to gather at a place he loved. Henry Boehm

Boehm, Henry – Age 84 of Truro, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018, after a brief illness. Born in Rotterdam in 1934 to Adolph Boehm and Wijntje van Berkel, Henry’s family survived the devastation of the Second World War, setting their hearts on a new life in Canada.

In 1952, the family arrived at Pier 21, settling in Ontario. There, Henry felt the call to ministry and departed for Reformed Bible College, where he met his wife and lifelong ministry partner, Jane DeKam. From rural Michigan, to Ontario’s north, and finally in beloved Nova Scotia, Henry and Jane faithfully served the church and nurtured a loving family of six children.

Henry was known for his faithful pastoral care, wise preaching and his sweet and gentle demeanor. Henry was a gifted orator (still preaching at 84), a fun and engaging storyteller, a servant leader, a car aficionado, a lover of pipe organs and the sea. Charming and handsome, steady and faithful, an adored father, papa and husband, Henry was loved as greatly as he loved.

Predeceased by his parents; brothers, Dolph and Frank; sister, Hedwig; son, Marcus. Terry William Swaysland

Swaysland, Terry William – Age 24, Head of Jeddore. It is with heavy hearts that we announce Terry’s sudden passing on October 24, 2018. He was born in Halifax, and grew up in Tantallon and Lake Echo. Terry loved anything outdoors, especially riding his four-wheeler.

Surviving are his parents, Stephen and Mary Gillis; the love of his life, Miranda Kuhn; her parents, Curtis and Wanda; her sisters, Cara (David), Meagan (Richard); his birth mother, Heidi Swaysland; grandmother, Gloria Swaysland; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his aunt, Michelle Swaysland.

Harold Dean

Dean, Harold – Age 79 of Dean. It is with great sadness that we announce Harold’s peaceful passing on October 20, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with his family by his side. Born in Dean, he was a son of the late Seldon and Margaret (Fisher) Dean.

Harold worked in the forestry industry, in the sawmill, and as a power saw operator. In his early years he was a volunteer fireman. Harold was a member of Lemmon Hill Sports Association. He was passionate about country music and played an integral role in organizing musical jamborees which he emceed for several years.

Harold was a loving husband, father, grampie and papa. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marie (Lemmon); sons, Greg (Shelly), Jeff (Amanda); daughter, Clara; grandchildren, Courtney, Colton, Rachel, Zachary, Carter; great-granddaughter, Makynzie; brother, David. He was predeceased by brothers, Wilson, George, Laurie; sister, Bessie.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 23 from 7-9 p.m. and funeral service Wednesday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, with student minister Calvin Burt officiating. Jason Vernon Laybolt

Laybolt, Jason Vernon – Age 40 of Musquodoboit Harbour. With immense sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Jason Vernon Laybolt on October 20, 2018, in Twin Oaks Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Jason is survived by his mother, Beatrice (Stevens) Laybolt; sister, Tammy Laybolt; his very treasured nephew and niece, Ryan and Raquel McKay; very recent great nephew, baby Noah; grandmother, Olive (Newcombe) Stevens; many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. He will be sadly missed by Brittany and Gunner, along with the little girl who stole his heart 12 years ago, Gaby, and her sister, Bree. Jason was predeceased by his father, Roy Laybolt, paternal grandparents, Fred and Marion Laybolt, maternal grandfather, Ralph Stevens.

Anyone who truly knew Jason could count on his loyalty and his kind and loving heart. Jason had many passions which included his love for drag racing, hot rod cars, Harley-Davidson bikes, hunting, spending time with his nephew and niece of whom he was so proud, the NHL (Boston Bruins) and cruising the highways with Uncle Jack, his sidekick.

Robert James “Jim” Whiteway

Whiteway, Robert James “Jim” – Age 62 of Gaetz Brook. My heart is breaking as I share with you that Jim passed away suddenly on Oct 17, 2018. He was my best friend, my rock and a loving husband for over 27 years.

Jim worked in the metal fabrication industry for most of his life and was employed by Corps of Commissionaires/Halifax Port Authority at the time of his death. Jim's size could be intimidating but he had a heart of gold and would drop everything to help others. He loved the outdoors and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He had many happy adventures fishing with Gordie and hunting with David. Jim was quite the handyman and very talented in woodworking and welding. He was an avid supporter of Veterans and the Legion, and was a past president and life member of Branch No. 161, serving on many committees and executive positions.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Sharon (McRae); his children, Guerin, Cameron, Nikki (Phil); in-laws, Liz Pace, Brian (Anne) McRae, Susan Peacock, Brenda MacRae, Heather (Duncan) Richards and Tracy (Rob) Rhyno. He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews, a large extended family of Faulkners and McRaes, and a large circle of friends, co-workers, neighbours and comrades. Jim was predeceased by in-laws, Jean, Everett and Alan McRae, Ronnie and Lindsay Peacock and Kenneth McRae.

Cremation has taken place. At Jim's request there will be no visitation or service. There will be a Legion service/Celebration of Life on Saturday, Oct 27th, from 1-3 p.m., upstairs in Royal Canadian Legion, Eastern Marine Branch No. 161, 6644 Highway 7, Gaetz Brook, NS B0J 1N0.  Everyone is welcome to attend. Elizabeth “Betty” (McKillop) Fisher

Fisher (McKillop), Elizabeth “Betty” – Age 66 of Stewiacke, passed away October 15, 2018, at home. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Annie (McKinnon) McKillop.

Known as “Aunt B” to all, Betty had an excellent sense of humor and always had the best cup of tea ready in exchange for a good story. Betty had a love for genealogy, and a creative talent for tole painting and sewing. Not only had she made many costumes for “the girls” over the years, but also helped her friends “hem” their pants on many occasions. Betty was an avid bowler and had been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Stewiacke Fire Department. Betty had a way of taking in those who needed help, making them feel safe, loved, and at home. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are “the girls”, Natasha McKillop (Tim Smith), Maitland; Vanessa McKillop (Maddie Doiron), Dartmouth; sisters-in-law, Margie Robinson, Wittenburg; Jean (Bob) Hall, Paradise; Karen (Denvert) Levy, Stewiacke; Juanita (Jim) Withrow, Prince George, B.C.; Charlotte Flemming (Robert Scullion), Chaswood; Ruth, Spryfield; Marianne, Bayhead; brother-in-law, Lee, Wolfville; numerous nieces and nephews; many cousins. Curtis Lane Bozeman - Funeral Announcement

Bozeman, Curtis Lane – Age 65, Meaghers Grant passed away September 16, 2018, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital with his loving wife, Rosalind “Roz” and friend, Lorena by his side, following a brief illness with cancer.

Born in Gary, Indiana he was a son of the late Charles Lee and Carrie Elizabeth (VanSyckle) Bozeman. He lived in Kansas, Kentucky and New Jersey. Curt had an inspiration for arts, canvas oils, music, wood and welding. At age 12, he started several bands as lead guitar player, before joining the Navy and serving in the USA. He was a boiler maker employed with large firms across the Eastern Seaboard, such as Corning and Curth Brothers. He worked on clam boats in Atlantic City and northern New Jersey. He later married and started a family. In 2000, he came to Canada with his present wife and retired in Nova Scotia where he enjoyed the country and seashore. He made many friends through music and art, and had a pleasant, relaxed life fishing and gardening.

Surviving are siblings, Charles “Kenneth”, Kentucky; Terry, Chicago; Keith, New Jersey; Wanda, Indiana; Margie and Krystal, Arizona and California; his children, Richard, Lisa, Clinton (Stephanie), Justin (Alison), Lindsay, Lindsey; five grandchildren, Dylan, AJ, and Jewel. He will be dearly missed by his wife and rabbit, Buttercup; as well as his musical friends who he played with weekly at JM Cafe in Musquodoboit Harbour. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Palestine.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th, with a memorial service to be held at 2 p.m., both in St. James United Church, Meaghers Grant, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating.

Donald “Brian” Patriquin

Patriquin, Donald “Brian” – Age 74 of Bass River, passed away quietly on October 12, 2018, in the QEII Infirmary Site, Halifax, with his daughter-in-law by his side holding his hand. Brian would want to be remembered most as a man of faith, who loved the Lord, and from this love came the love for his family, friends and his community. He will be greatly missed by us all.

Brian grew up in the big metropolis of Bass River, which he was very proud of and never failed to return to, no matter how far he roamed. In his later years, he was an active member of the Bass River Heritage Society and could often be found perched on a lawn mower cutting somebody’s grass.

Brian loved music and enjoyed playing his piano, and if you were out for an evening stroll along Maple Avenue in Bass River, you would often hear him playing his favorite hymns through the living room windows.

Brian was a true jack of all trades. From plumbing to electrical to woodworking, he did it all – and sometimes even correctly. He had an eclectic work history which included installing elevators, constructing torpedoes, maintaining a nuclear power plant, chemical plant operator for 23 years, and in his retirement, he was a golf course superintendent. And somewhere in there, he found time to sell vacuum cleaners and  natural cleaning products door-to-door.

Brian is survived by his sons, Aaron (Pattie), Trever (Melody); brothers, Ronnie and Terry; sisters, Gail, Judy and Cindy; grandchildren, Logan (Shaina), Jasmine and Colton (Kati); great-granddaughter, Emery; many nieces, nephews and extended family. Brian was preceded by his wife, Myrna Lynn (MacDonald); parents, Orville Patriquin and Helen (Patriquin) Abbott; brother, Michael.

Stephen Matthew "Magoo" MacInnis

MacInnis, Stephen Matthew “Magoo” – Age 54 of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2018. Born in Kitchener, Ont., he was a son of the late Donald and Marie (Fraser) MacInnis.

Stephen had a kind heart, would lend a helping hand to anyone, could be counted on not to break a promise and made friends wherever he went. Stephen owned and operated Magoo’s Heavy Hauling for almost 20 years.

He was a loving husband, father and brother and will always be loved and missed by wife, Janette; son, Mitchell; daughter, Maggie; siblings, Mike, Peter (Brenda), Danny (Shelley), Timmy (Shelly), Andy, Susan, Ron, Joe (Kim), Nancy; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Francis and Phyllis; extended Harnish family in-laws. He was predeceased by sister, Sally (Fred) and sister, Carol in infancy; sister-in-law, Tanya.

Visitation will be Friday, October 12, from 6-8 p.m., and funeral service Saturday at 11 a.m., both in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, with student minister Calvin Burt officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to an education fund for Mitchell and Maggie or to St. James United Church would be appreciated.

Shirley Jean (Rose) Jackson

Jackson, (Rose) Shirley Jean – It is with deep regret that the family of Shirley Jean (Rose) Jackson, age 89, announces her passing on October 6, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Shortts Lake.

Born in Oakfield, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Carrie Rose. She married John Bamford Jackson of Stewiacke and became a foster parent from 1962 until 1995 caring for over 60 children.

Shirley is survived by sons, Stephen (Debbie), Dutch Settlement; Fredrick (Sharon), Cloverdale; Peter (Ellen), Truro; daughters, Pam (Lloyd Bennett), Norwich, Ontario; Debbie (Harold Nielsen), Shortts Lake; Kelly (David Eye), Enfield; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Sadie Rose, Jenny Ramsey, Helen Lieshman, Frances Ramsey, Mary Barns, Cora Rose; brothers, Melvin, Angus, Lewis, Laurie, Robert, Clarence and Vincent.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, October 9th, from 2-4 p.m., in Royal Canadian Legion, Stewiacke Branch. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Gordon Valore Slaunwhite

Slaunwhite, Gordon Valore – Age 94, of Brookfield, passed away October 6, 2018, in Elk Court. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Norman and Mary (Samson) Slaunwhite.

Gordon was well known in the harness racing circuit, loved to travel, and enjoyed photographing wildlife and horses.

Surviving are his sisters, Marie Walker, Halifax; Geraldine (Vernon) Boutilier, Stewiacke East; many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.

Emily Margaret (Lemon) Shaw

Shaw (Lemon), Emily Margaret – Age 81 of Truro and formerly of Upper Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018, after a battle with lung cancer. Born in Upper Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late George and Frances Lemon.

Surviving are son, Logan, Upper Stewiacke; daughters, Marg (Fred) Ashe, Truro; Betty (Stephen) Johnson, Upper Stewiacke; daughter-in-law, Heather Shaw, Truro; brothers, Victor and Curtis, both of Truro; sisters, Dot Wallace, Alberta; Lorna Abbott, Truro; Audrey Lemon, Oxford; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Richard; son, Allen; brothers, Hedley and Freddie; sister, Viola.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke, Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. Memorial donations to Upper Stewiacke Springside Pastoral Charge would be appreciated.

Sherry Louise (Jennings) Faulkner

Faulkner (Jennings), Sherry Louise – Of Oyster Pond. It is with heavy hearts and overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of our precious wife, mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother. Sherry passed away on August 28, 2018, surrounded by her family. Born in 1962, she was a daughter of Shirley (Clarke) Jennings and the late Allen “Bud” Jennings.

Sherry leaves behind to mourn the love of her life, David; her children, Shawn (Nina), Matthew (Denise); grandchildren, Dakota, Angel, Electra, Leeland, Justice, Jason, J’Rose, Jaylin; brother, Timmy (Kim Wight); sisters, Janet (Warren Day), Chrisie (Mark DeBaie), Patricia (Paul Foley), Sheila (Stewart Kerr), Tammy (John Rowlings); many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Wyman; nephew, Samuel.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 13th, at 2p.m. in St. James Cemetery, 9114 Highway 7. A Celebration of Life to follow in Oyster Pond Fire Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
