Louise (Smith) Erskine, RN

Erskine (Smith), Louise, RN – April 27, 1943 – March 2, 2018. It is with great sadness that we, the family of Louise (Smith) Erskine, RN, announce her peaceful passing following a lengthy illness in Northwood Manor (Centre), in Halifax. Louise was the eldest daughter of Alexander and Geraldine Smith (of Sydney).

Louise was a loving mother to her three children, grandson, sister and dear friend to us all. Louise proudly graduated as an RN from the school of nursing at the City Hospital in Sydney in 1963 and worked there until moving to the Truro area and Colchester Hospital. It was there that she met her future husband, Kenneth Warren Erskine, with whom she raised three children while continuing her nursing career at the Victoria General Hospital. While at her VG position, Louise worked ardently in areas of surgical, medical, neurology, coronary and cardiology care. She prided herself in being part of the team performing the first heart transplant in Nova Scotia.

Louise was a beautiful soul who loved to sparkle in her jewelry and hats. In her spare time she watched old black and white movies, collected stained glass and loved to crochet. Vacations were mostly spent family camping and doing exploration travelling. She loved museums and history. Education never ended for her. During her time in Northwood, Louise befriended many and bonded with the nursing team as if to be a coworker. Together they travelled the road of Louise’s care. Our thanks to her dear team at Northwood and her “special caregivers” whom she bonded with during her 12 years there.

Louise leaves to mourn her loss her three children: loving daughter, Patricia; sons, Stuart (Jing and their daughter Chenxi) and Wesley Erskine, all of Halifax. Her special grandson, Ashton will be with her always! Also surviving are her sister, Alexis (Walter) MacDonald; brothers, Allan (Linda), Paul (Juanita), Sydney; Gerald (Bev) Smith, Kitchener, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Louise were her dad and mom, Alex and Gerry Smith (Smiths’ Bakery); and sister, Patricia Smith. Louise was also predeceased by her special aunt, Joyce Difabio.

In keeping with Louise’s wishes, she will be returning to her beloved Cape Breton home. There will be a special gathering and celebration in Louise’s memory at a later date to be announced, along the Bras d’Or Lakes, which she loved. Please remember her for her winning smile and dedication to family and service. She has left her mark on many in this life as we are certain she will in Heaven. Fly high dear angel! Merridy Evelyn Newman

Newman, Merridy Evelyn – Age 98 of East Stewiacke, and formerly of Trenton, Ont., passed away February 24, 2018, in The Magnolia Continuing Care, Enfield. Born in East Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Blanche (Kelly) Morton.

Widowed at age 36, she was left to raise and support her young family, working at many jobs to do this. She was active in her community in Trenton, and was acknowledged for her 50-plus years of dedication for her work with Royal Canadian Legion Auxilliary Branch No. 110, Trenton. She was the last surviving member of a family of 11.

She will always be loved and missed by daughters, Marilynn, Heather Seaman (Darrell Spencer); grandson, Shawn (Jara) Seaman; great-granddaughters, Rowan and Ione; many nieces and nephews; with a special thanks to nephew, Fred Morton. Besides her siblings, she was predeceased by her husband, Gerald.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

William “Brock” Higgins

Higgins, William “Brock” – Age 59, Higginsville. It is with broken hearts that we announce Brock’s sudden passing on February 23, 2018, at home.

Brock enjoyed the outdoors and particularly liked fishing in Mud Lake. He was a kind-hearted, dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

He will always be loved and missed by wife, Susan (VanWychen); daughter, Melissa; granddaughter, Nevaeh; brothers, Wayne (Heather), Ralph, Jackie (Shauna); sisters, Michelle (Paul), Valerie; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William “Bill” and Ralda Higgins; brother, Dale.

Funeral service will be Thursday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, Rev. Alice Rutherford officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Higginsville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Florence Pearl Duffy

Duffy, Florence Pearl – Age 75 of Waternish, Guysborough Co. In shock and sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister on Friday, February 23, 2018, in hospital in Truro, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Belleisle Creek, N.B., on July 25, 1942 to James Frederick Armstrong and Janet May (Northrup) Armstrong.

Florence was predeceased unexpectedly by her loving husband Jack only seven short months earlier.

Florence and Jack retired to Waternish, Guysborough Co., in 1994. They spent 24 healthy, peaceful and rewarding retirement years together. They fished the St. Mary’s River, tended the beautiful property they so loved, and lodged many classes of students studying various systems the area has to offer.

Much like Jack, Florence also had a passion for helping people and organizations and worked tirelessly for the St. Mary’s River Association, Guysborough County Seniors Games and her biggest passion, the Greenfield Oldsters. As a result, Florence held many volunteer offices over the years and was a recipient of many volunteer awards that she proudly displayed. Amongst Florence’s many skills, one she was rather adept at was securing grant funding and delivering on many hall projects for the Oldsters over the years. She particularly enjoyed working closely with former Minister Peter MacKay to secure federal grant funding.

Back on the home front she had several regular visitors checking on her and possibly to see if her blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, lemon squares or some other equally delectable treats were ready for sampling. Florence had a deep love for her children, grandchildren, dear friends, card games and singing karaoke.

Florence is survived by daughters, Janet (George) Young, Patricia (Derek) Douthwright, Enfield; son, John (Dawn) Duffy, Elmsdale; grandchildren, Janelle and Hilary Gehue, Selena, Christopher, Brittany Douthwright, Patrick and Joellie Duffy; siblings, Bill Armstrong, Gladys Wies, Faye Pearson and Barb Milburn, New Brunswick; great-grandchildren, Madison and Leigha MacLean and Tanner MacDonald; several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Hardy and Barbara Eshbaugh for their more than quarter century of friendship to our parents and for entrusting them with the care of their beautiful property. Mom and Dad absolutely loved living there and caring for the property and were so very fortunate to have had 24 wonderful years there. Also thank you to all of their special neighbours who helped Mom after Dad’s passing. She, along with us, was ever so grateful for your friendship and assistance during the last, and at times, difficult seven months.

As per Florence’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a private riverside ceremony and scattering of ashes for both she and Jack in Waternish at a later date. On March 3rd, the family will hold an informal visitation from 1-3 p.m. in the Elmsdale Legion, 850 Hwy. 2, Elmsdale. Robert Frederick “Bob” Miller

Miller, Robert Frederick “Bob” – Age 79 of East Stewiacke, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on February 19, 2018, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII.

Bob is survived by his wife of 37 years, Paula Tapuska Miller; his children, Sheri (Geoff) Atkinson of Huntsville, Ont.; and Robert Scott Miller of Georgetown, Ont. He will be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Steven (Sarah) Atkinson of Trenton, Ont.; Heather (Scot) Musser of Grand Bend, Ont.; and Lindsey (Jayden) Rodgers of Kitchener, Ont.; his cherished great-grandchildren, Olivia Atkinson, Emmett Atkinson, Jack Rodgers, Nixon Musser, Nova Musser and the one to come; his sisters, Pat (Dick) Bowman and Janet Miller, both of Kingston, Ont. Bob loved his dog, Daisy. He was a good brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and a favourite uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Theda and Courtland Miller; brothers, John and Peter; sisters-in-law, Lynn Miller, Mary Lou Miller; nephew, Sam Collins.

Bob died as he lived, surrounded by laughter and love. We will miss him beyond words. 

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 24, from 6-8 p.m., and funeral service will be Sunday, February 25, at 3 p.m., both in Shubenacadie United Church, Rev. Martin Reid officiating. Friends wishing to do so may make memorial donations to Colchester SPCA or a charity of your choice, and all will be greatly appreciated by the family.

Steward Rollings “Tudy” Reid

Reid, Steward Rollings “Tudy” – Age 73, Chaswood, passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Elwin Day and Stella Reid.

Tudy was a “jack-of-all trades” who was always there to lend a hand to family and friends alike. He enjoyed travelling, helping others, and when younger liked boxing. Above all, his family came first with him.

He will always be loved and missed by wife, Joan (Dorey); children, Tracey Reid, Jamie (Melissa) Reid, Deanna Leopold (Greg Gilroy), Justin Dorey; grandchildren, Logan, Colby, Mackensey, Gavin, Jayda, Lauchlin, Rosalie; brothers, Charles (Reta) Reid and Allen Day. He was predeceased by siblings, Beatrice, George, Edward, Clarence and Louis.

Isaac Ross Moore

Moore, Isaac Ross – Age 77 of Admiral Rock. With deep sadness we announce the passing of Isaac Moore on February 16, 2018.  Born in Lake Egmont, he was a son of the late Stanley and Alma (Dillman) Moore.

He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and all their accomplishments. He had a gentle and caring way and lived a selfless life serving others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marion (Wood); children, Peggy Dalrymple, Tammy (Joe) Ferguson, Isa (Zack) Amorim, Ira (Marie) Moore, Jason (Christa) Pearl; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Ethel Matthews. He was predeceased by brothers, Carl and August; sisters, Mary and Annie.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m. in Shubenacadie United Church, with Rev. Martin Reid officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS Society of Nova Scotia.

Douglas Wayne MacCabe

MacCabe, Douglas Wayne – Age 71 of Lake Echo, died February 15, 2018, at home.

Surviving are his wife, Sheri (Hilchie) Gaetz-MacCabe; son, Scott MacCabe, Canmore, Alta.; daughter, Shannon (Paul) Butler, Muncie, Indiana; stepdaughters, Kiersten Gaetz, Dartmouth; Kenzie (Brian) Gaetz, Morinville, Alta.; siblings, Julia Atkins, John (Brenda), Elsie (Roger) Swim, Eugene, and Colin (Carol). Doug was an adoring grandfather of Karmen, Quintin, Kacie, Amelia, and Adeline. He was best buds with Sarah and Katherine. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Florence; and ex-wife, Judy Burns.

Doug began working at age 16 for Colonel Saunders, becoming a trusted manager at KFC. Later he was owner-operator of a distribution business supplying the South Shore. He took great pride in his last career providing outstanding service for dental supply companies. Doug was a wonderful husband, outstanding dad, and a giving neighbour and friend; whether it was fixing a tap, shovelling a driveway, or renovating a room. He was a talented and successful artist, creating many beloved works and sharing his knowledge and time freely with his art students. Doug never backed down from a challenge and truly enjoyed learning new skills. His other loves were German shepherds, vintage cars, and kids. After retirement he renewed his love of kite-flying and made friends worldwide. He was a founding member of the Lake Echo C.O.P. Doug loved to travel, was a history buff, and an avid Game of Thrones fan. He was a master of the card game “Dammit”, relishing his wins. Every stranger was a potential friend and he never missed a chance to connect. Always the prankster, he made everyone laugh and was king of the inappropriate joke.

Wayne Robert Peters

Peters, Wayne Robert – With broken hearts we announce the of the passing of Wayne Peters, age 60, on February 15, 2018, in Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by family.

Wayne is survived by long-time partner, Margaret “Marg” Myers; mother, Dolly; son, Joel (Ocean); daughter, Kimberley (Jordan) Carroll; grandchildren, Audrina, Jase, Quinn, Hannah; brothers, Edward, Dave (Jeanie), Keith (Hilda); sisters, Susan Martin, Joyce (Keith) Carvery; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by father, Carl; brother-in-law, Donnie Martin; grandparents, Myrtle and John Peters, Lawrence and Frances Carroll.

Wayne was active in sports and a very good first baseman in softball over the years. He also coached Little League ball. Wayne worked for Tartan Drywall for many years as a drywaller. In later years, he worked as a security guard and dispatcher. Wayne had a great sense of humour. He loved spending time on the lake fishing as well as hunting.

Soldan, Shirley Ann – Age 70, Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully at home on February 13, 2018, with family by her side.

Pearl (Beaver) McNeil

McNeil (Beaver), Pearl – Age 87 of Truro, died peacefully at home on February 10, 2018.

Pearl is survived by her loving husband, Robert; her brother, Harley (Doreen); her children, Danal (Donna), David (Delica), Sandra (George) and Vaughn; her stepchildren, Ronda (Willem), Robert (Jackie), Beverly (John), Joan (David), Elizabeth (Bruce) and Marianne (Arnold); 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Annie and Aubrey Beaver; her husband; Aubrey; and her brothers, Louis, Cecil and Kenneth.

Pearl worked for many years as a legal secretary at English Law in Enfield. She was an avid sewer, a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan and a loving homemaker. She was a treasured mother who raised two families and loved spending time with them.

Cremation has taken place. All are welcome to attend a funeral to celebrate Pearl’s life on Monday, February 26 at 2 p.m. in Riverview United Church, Elmsdale, with Rev. Catherine MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Charmaine Lynn Rose McDowell

McDowell, Charmaine Lynn Rose – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charmaine on February 4, 2018, at home. Born in Halifax, she was given only a few years to live. However, she defied all odds to be with us for 46 very special years.

Charmaine loved guitar music, and food, especially pizza, spaghetti, lasagne, hamburgers and ice cream! To know her was to love her. She made many friends through her school years at Milford and Shubenacadie Elementary, Hants East Rural High and Corridor Community Options for Adults. She logged thousands of kilometers as her mother’s co-pilot, bussing special needs students to and from school. The two were an inseparable team, so much so that if Mary showed up anywhere without Charmaine, people would quickly ask, “where is Char”?

Charmaine will be sorely missed by her parents, Mary and Gary McDowell; sisters, Cindy (Kendall) Nowe; Cathy Benson; brothers, Steven (Jessica) Rose, Mark McDowell (Robyn); nieces, Briana and Erin; nephews, Zach and Thane.

Franklin “Roderick” Taylor

Taylor, Franklin “Roderick” – Age 89 of Stewiacke, passed away February 3, 2018, as a result of injuries received in a car/pedestrian accident. Born in Wittenburg, he was a son of the late Clarence and Stella (Laidlaw) Taylor.

Rod was a veteran of the Korean War, and served as a medic in the Air Force. He was a long-time member of Stewiacke Legion Branch No. 70. Rod was a prominent figure in Stewiacke riding his bike and walking, always stopping to talk with whomever he met. He received Volunteer of the Year award for his service to others.

Rod was a beloved husband of wife, Linda (Guest); father of son, Brian, Calgary, Alta.; daughter, Nancy (Peter) Summers, London, Ont.; brother of John (Velma), Wittenburg; sister, Zeta Sanford, Burlington; stepfather of Kathryn Rudolph, Cambridge, Ont.; Jonathan Mark, Toronto, Ont. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary and Faye; brothers, James, Cecil and Donald.

Arthur Clifford Murphy

Murphy, Arthur Clifford – Age 98, passed away January 31, 2018. Born in Lake Egmont, he was a son of the late William and Ella (MacKenzie) Murphy.

Arthur began his working life in the woods at a young age. He joined the army in 1942 and served overseas as a gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery in the Second World War. He was part of the D-Day forces, landing in France, and seeing continuous action in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany until the end of the war. It was during training in England that he and a friend decided to go to Scotland while on leave. It was on that leave that he met Jessie, his future wife.

After the war, they settled in Musquodoboit, where he farmed until 1968. He then started working for Farmer’s Dairy as a truck driver until he retired in 1982. Arthur was an avid gardener, and enjoyed sharing the bounty from his efforts with family and friends. He was quick to help family and friends whenever help was needed, and took great joy in being able to assist in whatever way he could.

Surviving are son, Colin (Nancy); daughter-in-law, Anne Murphy; grandchildren, Dawn Murphy, Amy (Matthew) Garland, Jennifer (David) Whitten, Jessica Murphy and Jeffrey Murphy; great-grandchildren, Leah Whitten and Christopher Whitten. He was predeceased by his wife, Jessie (Smith); sons, Ronald and Philip; brothers, Allan, John, Frank, and Fred; sisters, Gertrude Stewart and Hazel McMullin.

A spring burial will be held at a later date in Elderbank Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association.

Peter James Myers

Myers, Peter James – of Conrod Settlement, passed away January 30, 2018, at home. Peter was born and grew up in Myers Point, Jeddore, with his grandmother, Roxanna.

As a young man, Peter left for the city to seek employment, working in retail business, always returning to the country for weekends. In 1953 he met the love of his life, Nora, on a dance floor at the Beech Hill Inn. They were married September 1955.

As a young couple with two small boys, Peter and Nora set off on a lifelong adventure, first in New Brunswick, then Ontario, where Peter worked in the hospitality industry. They later worked their way back to their native Nova Scotia, with their boys now young men. Peter worked as a ship’s purser with Bedford Institute of Oceanography until retirement. The next several winters were spent on Vancouver Island. Peter’s most enjoyable time, regardless of the season, was spent at his woods camp where he was in the process of building a brand new camp.

He is survived by his wife, Nora (Marks); sons, Brad (wife, Hattie); Brian; daughter-in-law, Laura (Russell); grandsons, Luke, Daniel, Sean and Trevor; great-grandson, Tyson.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 10th, at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Lower Ship Harbour. Reception to follow in Ship Harbour Community Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Missions to Seafarers or a charity of your choice.

Cyril Roland “Cy” Brimicombe

Brimicombe, Cyril Roland “Cy” – Of Truro. Husband of Catherine, passed away January 26, 2018 in Truro.

Cy was a friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob. He was predeceased by son, Robert; brother, Lloyd; sister, Marion.

Samantha Elaine Doucette

Doucette, Samantha Elaine – Age 47 of Truro, died January 25, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Tatamagouche, she was a daughter of Jack and Jennie Patriquin.

Besides her parents, Samantha is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Tamara; grandchildren, Arya Rose and Leeanna Marie; sisters, Tracy Reitsma (Cary), Prince Edward Island; and Krista Hiltz (Shawn), Alberta. She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Rose.

Christine Beryl Selway

Selway, Christine Beryl – Age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 22, 2018, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Christine was born in Plymouth, Devon, England and grew up in Malborough, England. She was predeceased by parents, Rhoda and Arthur Horswill (of Ilsington, England).

Christine married Arnold Selway in 1967 in Abbotskerswell, England. She went to college in England to train as a cook and then worked as a cook for a private school. She was a gifted pianist and played the pipe organ for the Anglican Church in England. Christine and Arnold immigrated to Canada in 1968 where Arnold worked on a farm in Fort Ellis. Their daughter, Julie, currently of Sudbury, was born. Christine and Arnold bought their own farm in Alton where she lived for most of her life. Their son, Tony, currently of Moncton, was born soon after they moved to Alton.

Christine enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, music, and Tai Chi. She played the organ and was part of the choir of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Stewiacke for many years. She also taught Sunday school in Holy Trinity, and piano out of her home. Christine learned to play guitar and took choral lessons. Her cooking skills were helpful as she was diagnosed as a Celiac years before gluten-free food was easy to buy. She made wheat bread and, later on, gluten-free bread every week. She made one quilt per year for each of her family members for baby cribs, twin-size and queen-size beds.

Christine is survived by her husband, Arnold, Lower Onslow; sisters, Dorothy Lewis and Marion Marshall of England; Julie Selway, husband Jian Xiong and children Edward, Peter and Henry Xiong; Tony Selway, wife Tracy Selway and children Rachel, Liam, Aeden and Connor.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be Thursday, January 25 at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, Truro, with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society (Atlantic Division) or a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to thank Colchester East Hants Health Centre Palliative Care and Intermediate Care Unit nurses and doctors for their kind care. The family also would like to thank staff and nurses of Parkland, Fergus Hall, Truro, for seven years of care and support.

Marcia Lee Gordon

Gordon, Marcia Lee – Age 53, Dartmouth, passed away January 22, 2018, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of Edith (Croze) Little and the late Hugh Little.

Marcia devoted her life to her family and homecare to seniors. She was a loving mother and will always be missed by her son, Brandon; husband, Derrick Finney; siblings, Edward, Hughie (Beverly), Kimberly, Richard (Shaunalee).

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in Port Wallis United Church, Dartmouth, Rev. Ivan Gregan officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Cape Breton. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Linda Marie (Cavanaugh) Clark

Clark (Cavanaugh), Linda Marie – Age 71 of Truro, and previously of Coldstream Rd., Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2018, with her family at her side. Born in Upper North River, she was a daughter of the late Ira and Ivy (Ettinger) Cavanaugh and beloved wife of the late David Charles Clark.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Tammy (James Robinson), Montrose; Vanda (Carl Cutler), Economy; Tosha (Andrew Castle), Hilden; Christopher (Sherry), Stewiacke; David (Nadine), West St. Andrews; and her chosen son, Leslie Barkhouse (Debbie), Shubenacadie. She was extremely proud of all of her 23 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was a devoted sister of Bernard, James, Olivia, Judy, Bonnie, Verda, Diane and Barbara; and her many nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by brother, Allison; and sister, Shirley.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, January 28, from 2-5 p.m. in Truro Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
