David Austin Stewart

Stewart, David Austin – Age 75 of Middle Musquodoboit, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018, at home. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Donald and Dorothy (Fisher) Stewart.

David enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and spent time panning for gold in Moose River. He had been a carpenter and a woodsman in his younger years. In the last few years of his life, David spent more time connecting with his family.

Surviving are sons, Donald, Westville; Craig (Kathy), Stewiacke East; Derek (Tammy), Truro; Shaune (Julie), Shortt’s Lake; grandchildren, Vanessa and Nathaniel (Caitlyn) MacBurnie; Kody and Lauren Stewart; Riley and Paige Stewart; great-grandson, Dax MacBurnie; brother, Duane (Connie); sister, Donna Fleck; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife, Jeanne Powers; daughter, Judylee MacBurnie; brother-in-law, Lloyd Fleck.

Cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.

Leonard Joseph Mellaney

Mellaney, Leonard Joseph – Age 86, Porters Lake, passed away January 6, 2018, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Cornwall, Ont., he was a son of the late Angus and Mary (Campbell) Mellaney.

Len was well-known in the retail grocery industry where he had worked for many years. He had been a member of IOOF Concord Lodge No. 69. For the past year, he had been a resident of Ocean View Manor, Eastern Passage. Len was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He will always be missed by wife, Ivy; niece, Cynthia Mellaney; nephew, Eldon (Tamara) Mellaney; sister-in-law, Carolyn Mellaney; stepdaughter, Shannon Weiterman; stepson, Robert (Shelley) Woodgate. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis (Martell); brothers, James, John and Hugh.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, 2-4 p.m., and funeral service will be Friday, at 11 a.m., both in St. John’s Anglican Church, Westphal, Rev. Tricia Ingram officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Georgetown, P.E.I. No flowers by request. Memorial donations to St. John’s Anglican Church would be appreciated.

Carole Hilda Blackmore

Blackmore, Carole Hilda – Age 72, died Thursday, January 4, 2018, in Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth. Carole was born in Sydney to the late Arthur and Eileen (Mercer) Blackmore.

Carole grew up in various Nova Scotia towns but always happily anticipated summers in Mira Gut, Cape Breton, with her extended family. She became a fun, kind, and loving soul who did well in school and enjoyed community activities with friends and family. As a young woman she embraced motherhood, working hard to raise her daughter on her own and later helping to care for her brother, David. A nature lover, she enjoyed hikes, bird watching, and other outdoor activities. Carole was spiritual and had a strong commitment to social justice. She was a voracious reader; sharing books, articles, and current news with Kathryn was a special and favourite activity throughout her life. For many years, Carole was a member of a bi-weekly supper club of entertaining, dynamic, and supportive women. She was also a member of the Voice of Women, and volunteered with Diabetes Canada and at Northwood.

During her career she lived in Moncton where she had an administrative position at CBC, and later in Halifax where she worked for more than 20 years at the Atlantic School of Theology.

Carole will be missed by her daughter, Kathryn (Barrett Khan, Linden, and Martha), Dartmouth; her brothers, David and Douglas (Valerie Mansour), Halifax; nieces, Jesse Blackmore (Shannon Davidson, Caeden), Vancouver; Jillian Blackmore (Marty Mork, Sophia, and Olivia), Montreal; sister-in-law, Jan Blackmore, Kingston, Ont. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her youngest brother, Ron (2002).

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A celebration of life in Carole’s honour will be held on Friday, February 9th, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in The Fairbanks Centre (Shubie Park), 54 Locks Rd., Dartmouth. Donations in Carole’s memory may be made to Diabetes Canada, Canadian Wildlife Federation, or YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth.

Special thanks to the staff of Parkland’s Glasgow Hall, who cared for Carole with love and respect for the past several years. Thank you also to the Seniors Mental Health Services team at the Nova Scotia Hospital for their expertise in providing information and support about dementia.

Larry Edgar “Clem” Manuel

Manuel, Larry Edgar “Clem” – Age 68 of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. Larry was a son of the late Carroll and Rhoda Manuel.

He is survived by his wife, Mazie Bayers; daughters, Nichole (Mark), Laurie-Ann (Kevin); stepdaughter, Terri (Bruce); grandchildren, Jordan (Hayley), Justin (Darby), Amber, Jade; great-grandson, Riley; brother, Eric (Darlene); sisters, Phyllis (Hiram), Valerie (Byron), Helen (Danny); many nieces and nephews.

Helen Josephine (Gamble) Abbott

Abbott (Gamble), Helen Josephine – Age 97, of Bass River, passed away on December 30, 2017, in Debert Court, with her loving family beside her.

Surviving are her children, Robert Patriquin, Brian Patriquin, Gayle Vance (Gary), Terry Patriquin (Sherry), Judy McLaughlin (William), and Cindy Grue; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her first husband, Orville Patriquin; her second husband, Robert Abbott; son, Michael; daughters-in-law, Susan and Myrna; son-in-law, Stuart; six sisters and brothers.

Helen loved her family home on Edgewood, her flowers, and skunking people at crib.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Wednesday, January 3, at 7 p.m., in Riverside United Church, Bass River. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Riverside Cemetery, Bass River.

Teresa “Tee” (Pratt) Whidden

Whidden (Pratt), Teresa “Tee” – passed away peacefully in Cumberland Regional Hospital, Amherst, on December 29, 2017, at the age of 59. Teresa was born in Truro, a daughter of the late Stewart and Hazel Pratt.

She grew up in Upper Stewiacke, then moved to Truro where she lived for the majority of her life. For the past 15 years, Teresa had lived in the Springhill area. She was an avid dart player, and was loved by many in the community. She loved her best friends, Mike and Tracy Gerrior, and always loved being the life of the party. She was a devoted Montreal Canadiens fan. She loved to make people laugh, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her children, Douglas Lemmon (Janice), Juanita Holmes (Mike), Marsha McClellan, Jennifer Whidden (Carman); grandchildren, Haley, Eric, Nicholas, RJay, Mataya, Landyn and Hollynd; siblings, Judy Crouse (Jimmy), Sharon Lemmon (Robert), Arlene Ellis (Kerry), Louise Cox (Red), Betty Creelman (Stewart), Barry Pratt (Charolotte), Greg Pratt (Debbie). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by sons, Ronald Joseph Lemmon and Daniel Travis Lemmon.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Upper Stewiacke United Church, with Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Lockhart, Charles Sydney – of Debert, passed away December 28, 2017, in Johnson Manor, Truro. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Lockhart.

Douglas Andrew Mattka

Mattka, Douglas Andrew – 68, Dartmouth. It is with deep sadness we announce that Douglas passed away December 27, 2017, in Dartmouth General Hospital, after battling cancer. He will be greatly missed by his wife Beth; stepdaughters, Karen (Kenny), Kori; sister, Janet (George); beloved grandchildren, Adam, Darian, Sasha, Desiree, Trinity, Samantha, Kimmie, David and Vinnie; sister-in-law, Margaret (Ken); brother-in-law, Ron (Marcia); numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Victoria Hadden; parents, John and Rosalea Mattka.

Doug loved sailing, working in his workshop, going to flea markets, and his dogs. He loved trains and was a member of the Dartmouth Model Railway Club. He was also an active member of Regal Heights Baptist Church in Dartmouth, where he will be deeply missed. He was well known for his kindness and generosity, his sense of humour and outgoing personality.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Regal Heights Baptist Church, 6 Regal Road, on January 6 at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jason Cole officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Children’s Ministry, Regal Heights Baptist Church, 6 Regal Road, Dartmouth, NS B2W 4Z7.

Arthur Boyd Lawlor

Lawlor, Arthur Boyd – Age 99, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2017, in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Boyd’s wishes, a family spring burial will be held in Upper Musquodoboit.

Trevor Brooke Taylor

Taylor, Trevor Brooke – Age 43 of Halifax, passed peacefully at home on December 23, 2017. He was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle.

Born in 1974, Trevor often enjoyed reminiscing about his childhood in Middle Musquodoboit. He had an excellent memory and could always impress his sister by easily recalling details from decades ago as if they were yesterday.

He loved his parents dearly, and doted on his beloved mother whenever possible. He also enjoyed spending time trucking with his father. He especially loved to recall the long trip they took to California in 1982.

Trevor spent the last four years with Tara, the love of his life. He was very proud to have married a wonderful woman who is beautiful inside and out. Tara brought a light into Trevor’s life that his whole family will forever be grateful for.

Trev had a lifelong love of fitness, spending time in the gym and working out. He spent time body building and competitively power lifting. He was an expert on matters of health and nutrition. Music was another of Trevor’s passions, which he loved to share with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Tara Lee Taylor; his broken-hearted parents, Brooke and Norma (Streatch) Taylor; stepson, Brandon MacCallum; sister, Julie Taylor (David Jack); niece, Lily Taylor-Stackhouse; grandmother, Janet (Langille) Taylor; father-in-law, Bib Shields (Ruth); numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Earl and Dorothy Streatch, and paternal grandfather, Harry Taylor.

Trevor loved Jesus with all his heart. Comfort is taken in knowing his gentle soul is safe in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. William Francis “Bill” Connors

Connors, William Francis “Bill” – Age 81 of Elk Court, Brookfield, and formerly of Middle Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Boutilier) Connors, and was the last surviving member of his family.

He was a hard worker who drove a transport truck for 31 years, proudly accident-free. Dad loved old westerns, reading, hunting, fishing, darts, and was quite the handyman on most anything. He had a good sense of humour, with such an infectious laugh, it would leave you smiling.

He is survived by his children, Doug (Donna Dell), Dale McConnell (Ron), Lorelei Taylor (Barry), Teresa; grandchildren, Kristopher, Matthew and Kyle McConnell; Erin, Cory, Adam and Emma Taylor; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Kameron, Kolton and Kitana; in-laws, Joan Connors, Jean Skinner, Muriel Smith, Harry Carter; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loving family at Elk Court, where he happily spent his final three years. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy “Dot”; his siblings, Mary “Mamie”, Katherine, John, Bernard, George, Mildred, Jean; son-in-law, Milton “Mit” Redmond.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. As per their wishes, there will be a spring burial for Mum and Dad to be laid to rest together. Memorial donations may be made to IWK Foundation.

Gary George Carville

Carville, Gary George – It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear husband and soul mate Gary, age 53, of Dartmouth, on December 15, 2017. Gary fought cancer for two years as only he could, with grace and humour.

Born in St. John’s, N.L., Gary was a son of the late William and Margaret (Hatfield) Carville. Gary was a former member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Canadian Veteran Freedom Riders, Wild Hogs, Kin Canada and Public Services and Procurement Canada. He was known for his sense of humour and quick wit.

Gary is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kim (Brennan); brother, Byron (Lisa); sister, Martina (Mark) Keating; special nieces, Kelly Fitzpatrick and Laura Carville; nephew, Michael Keating; and of course, his fur babies, Chicklett and Gomi; and dear friends.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. As per Gary’s request, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be Thursday, December 21, at 2 p.m. in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 15 Caledonia Rd., Dartmouth. Marilyn Margaret (Keizer) Bennet

Bennet (Keizer), Marilyn Margaret – Age 75 of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away peacefully at home on December 12, 2017, surrounded by her family. Born in Porters Lake, she was the only child of Earl and Erna (Crawford) Keizer.

Marilyn spent a lot of her youth in East Chezzetcook with her grandparents and extended family. That is where she met her future husband, Bill, while sitting on the side of the road with her cousin. Marilyn was very active in the community and volunteered over the years with Twin Oaks Hospital Auxiliary, MHVFD Ladies Auxiliary, Eastern Shore Minor Hockey and Figure Skating Club, St. Thomas ACW and Mother’s Union. She loved to entertain and have people in for a chat, supper or a game of cards, and was always a sociable person. Her motto was “you never went away hungry from this house”. To list Marilyn’s hobbies and interests would be too long, but she was best known for sewing with her own business, Maggie J’s Designs, for cooking, because we can’t count how many people she served roast beef dinners to over the years, and finally, camping, where she counted down the days from the end of one season to the next. She was happiest when she spent time with family and friends.

She leaves behind her broken-hearted soul mate of 61 years, Bill; son, Rick (Anne), both of Musquodoboit Harbour; daughter, Margaret (Frank) Peel, Aylesford; grandchildren, Nicole (Adam), Kathie-Lee (Robert), Matthew and Nicholas; and the apple of GG’s eye, great-grandson, Kamden. She was predeceased by son, Dale.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6:30-9 p.m. on Friday, December 15, and funeral will be Saturday, December 16, at 2 p.m., both in St. Thomas Anglican Church, 8498 Hwy. 7, Musquodoboit Harbour, Rev. Andrew Mortimer officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Twin Oaks Hospital or St. Thomas Anglican Church.

The family would like to thank the nurses of Twin Oaks, Continuing Care and Palliative Care for their excellent care during Mom’s time in hospital and while at home.

Larry Flemming Higgins

Higgins, Larry Flemming – Age 59 of Middle Musquodoboit, passed away December 11, 2017 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Clifford and Lois (Flemming) Higgins.

Larry was honest, innovative and hard working. He took pride in his work and craftsmanship that goes into building.

Family came first with him and he will always be remembered and missed by wife, the former Helen Hutchinson; son, Howard, Stewiacke; brothers, Dougie, Truro; Gary, Shubenacadie; Murray, Vancouver; sister, Linda, Eastern Passage; and some special friends – you know who you are. He was predeceased by sister, Judy.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, December 15, in the Bicentennial Theatre, Middle Musquodoboit. Burial will be in Higginsville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Multiple Sclerosis Society (Atlantic Division).

John Berlin “Jack” Osborne

Osborne, John Berlin “Jack” – Age 76 of Dutch Settlement and formerly of Enfield, passed away December 11, 2017. Jack left us as he lived his life, quietly and gently. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late Mary Ellen “Mae” Isenor (Osborne).

Jack grew up in Enfield, residing with his grandmother, Blanche, Uncle Harold, Aunt Elsie and their children. He moved to Dutch Settlement in 1982 to reside with his mother, Mae, until her passing, and remained there until his death.

Jack entered the work force at an early age in the autobody industry. He started his career at E.D. Horne’s garage in Enfield and later with Clarke’s Autobody. In his early years, he enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He loved to play cards, listen to country music, watch wrestling and enjoyed the odd pint of beer. He was a kind and gentle soul who never had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. Although Jack’s health was failing, whenever you asked him how he was feeling, he would always say Number One! Number One!

Jack is survived by brothers, Graham (Dianne), Gregory (Paula), John (Isabel), Laurie (Jeannette); sisters, Sandra Rogers, Sonja Isenor, Judy (Karl); sister-in-law, Margaret; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Constable Royce Isenor; brothers-in-law, Philip Rogers and Marven Isenor.

Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 15, in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Enfield, Father Michael Walsh officiating. Daisy Charlotte Kindervater

Kindervater, Daisy Charlotte – Age 93 of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away December 10, 2017 in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Centre Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Walter and May (Reid) Matheson.

Daisy loved music, particularly fiddle music, which she enjoyed at the Seniors Club in Upper Musquodoboit. She was a homemaker who took pride in her housekeeping.

Surviving are son, Tom (Marlene), Truro; Carol Cummins, Upper Musquodoboit; grandchildren, Rhonda (Michael), Derek (Staci), Colleen Kindervater; Krista, Michael (Karla) Cummins; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Goldie Gates, New Minas; Connie Wheeler, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by husband, Milton; son-in-law, Doug Cummins; brothers, George, Wendell, Garnet, Ronald; sister, Isabel.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 14 at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit, Rev. Alice Rutherford officiating. The family will meet friends downstairs in St. James United Church following the service. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Brendan Joseph Dempsey

Dempsey, Brendan Joseph – Age 55, passed away peacefully at his home in Head of Chezzetcook on December 9, 2017, after a courageous battle against diabetes and cancer. He has gone to be with his saviour, Jesus Christ.

Brendan was a man of great faith, integrity, wisdom and generosity. His convictions to do what’s right and help others were strong. Through his simple gestures and entertaining stories (of which there was no shortage), he spread kindness to friends and strangers alike.

He spent countless hours walking, exploring and gathering a deep awareness of his surrounding environment. This was revealed through his work. As an accomplished artist, Brendan was given the gift of capturing all of nature’s wonder and beauty in his paintings. Brendan was a people person. He loved a challenge and to challenge others.

He had a great love of family, and to those who are left behind he will be greatly missed. Brendan is survived by his wife and best friend, Bernadette; his pillars of strength, wisdom and kindness, his parents, Brendan and Annette Dempsey; his devoted brothers and sisters, Kevin (Judy), Michelle (Alan), Denise (Scott), John Paul (Wanda), his precious Odette (Pierre); many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; his adopted stepfamily, the Desmonds: Jennifer (Derek), Jamie, Joshua, his special angel, Brianna; Cynthia and Ernie Nordin; sister-in-law, Liz Williams.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, in Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church, 17 Peter Ct., Mineville. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret MacPherson; son, Robert (Dana), Ontario; grandsons, Jacob, Joshua; sister, Yvonne (Donald) Dunbar, Sherbrooke; three nieces and two nephews.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Evelyn “Marie” (Laidlaw) Whiteside

Whiteside (Laidlaw), Evelyn “Marie” – Marie passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on November 30, 2017, in her 68th year, having battled pancreatic cancer since August.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bob and Evelyn Laidlaw, and grandson, Nathanael. Marie is survived by her brother, David (Brenda), and her sister, Joyce (Rob). She is sadly missed by her loving husband, Richard “Rick”, having celebrated 49 years of marriage in August. They are the parents of three sons, Rob (Heidi), children Tatianna, Connor; Jason (Denise), children Caleb, Ben, Hannah, Julia; and Greg (Meagan), children Jonah, Angelia, Elyse. She is also lovingly remembered by many extended family members.

Alongside her husband, she served the Lord faithfully in Canada (Ontario, Newfoundland, Manitoba), the United States (Georgia, Missouri) and the Republic of Belarus (Ratamka, Minsk), filling many positions in fruitful Christian service. With a myriad of talents, as a young teenager she played piano in church, then excelled as a teacher and mentor, and crafting in her spare time. Many wonderful tributes attesting to her gracious nature, unconditional love, winning smile, and warm hugs have flowed throughout social media from friends literally around the world. Her final wishes included cremation and her ashes to be placed near a chapel in northern Ontario, a place where she communed closely with God as a teenager. Throughout her final days in hospital, she was an encouragement to the staff, spreading cheer to everyone who visited her. In her honour, a memorial service will be held on January 20, 2018.

Ruby Margaret Perrin

Perrin, Ruby Margaret – Age 88 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2017, in Palliative Care, with her cherished family by her side. Born in Centre Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Charles “Herb” and Edith (Stewart) Redmond.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Victor; daughters, Janet (Gary Merlin); Susan, both of Halifax; sister, Hazel Redmond, Ottawa; several nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by brothers, Herbert, Sydney, Ralph; and sister, Emma.

Cremation has taken place. At Ruby’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations in her memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or a charity of choice.
