Alan Sibley Campbell

Al with his all-time favourite Bobby Orr

Al with his all-time favourite Bobby Orr

Campbell, Alan Sibley – Middle Stewiacke. Born in 1949, he passed away April 21st, 2017 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Alan grew up on the family farm in Middle Stewiacke, a son of the late Ralph and Winifred Campbell, and a product of the post-war baby boom. Kids then learned to work hard and play hard, and it was there that Alan’s lifelong love of sports was born and flourished. He played sports most of his life – hockey on the pond in winter and softball at the ballfield in summer, fished and trapped and worked on the farm. He attended South Colchester Academy and graduated in 1967. His talent and ability led to positions on many local teams including the Brookfield Elks and the Truro Bearcats, as well as membership in the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Canadian Mens Softball Champions in 1980.

Alan’s talent and ability also led to his field of study and a Bachelor of Physical Education from University of New Brunswick in 1973. He played for the UNB Varsity Red Devils Hockey team for three seasons, Junior Varsity 1969-70 and Varsity 1970-1972.

After graduation he accepted a position as Director of Recreation for the Town of Summerside, P.E.I. and resided there for three years. He was the Captain of the Summerside Combines Intermediate Mens Hockey Team and player/Coach of the Mens Softball Team. Alan went on to complete his Masters Degree in Recreational Planning at the University of Waterloo in 1979.

He returned to the family farm, Bellton Farms, in Middle Stewiacke, which he purchased after his father passed away. He developed a successful Registered Holstein breeding program with extensive ET work and his breeding stock was sold all over North America. Alan’s favourite was Hanover-Hill R A Star Lee EX 23 stars, with some 70 daughters to their credit.  Right up until the day he died, he asked if there were any new results from the current classification round – he was hoping a couple of daughters would “move up” and Star Lee would get her 25 stars!

The culmination of years of hard work and careful animal husbandry was the Master Breeder Award in 2009, awarded by Holstein Canada to only 20 herds across Canada every year. It is their highest honour. Alan retired from dairy farming in 2009. He began playing golf in 2010 and played his last game on Jekyll Island, Georgia on February 27th, 2017. He loved golf with all the passion of all his other sports (and some frustration, too). He enjoyed many games on many courses in the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, Ontario and many states on the Eastern Seaboard but none as much as those on Jekyll Island, his home away from home for the last five years.

Alan will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him! He was a unique individual with a great sense of humour and a serious appreciation of all sport. He passed away watching “the hockey game”.

Alan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1994 and managed to “work and play through it” for 23 years. He and his partner, Jane McDonald, wish to say a sincere “Thank You” to Dr. Sarbjit Singh and Dr. David King for their years of care. Also thanks to the nurses and staff on D-Wing at Colchester East Hants Health Centre – Alan appreciated your care and enjoyed your company!

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Harriet Marna Rose (Lane, Gerrie, Sipols) Cox

Cox, Harriet Marna Rose (Lane, Gerrie, Sipols) – Age 93, of Dean, and formerly of Toronto, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 8, 2017 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit.

After fighting her way back from a heart attack, she had a major stroke that started a two-year battle slowly losing her fight. She went from doing everything for herself to relying on other people for the most basic things. Life threw her one curve ball after another.

Never one to quit, at the age of 89, she was laying 16-inch patio stones to make a walkway behind her house. She had a little stool to sit on and pull the weeds around the walk. Anyone who knew her would say she liked to party. Once the music started she was on the dance floor all night, stopping only long enough to rehydrate with a shot of Crown Royal and water. She was just go, go, go, the rest of the time. No matter what she did, she gave it her all. She had trophies for bowling, darts, and crib. The first time she went to Florida with Bobby Smith she came back with a trophy for shuffleboard, a game she had never played before!

Surviving are sons, Marvin Gerrie, Wayne Gerrie and Roger Sipols; two grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation – Hospital, or a local women’s shelter would be appreciated.

He traveled throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and enjoyed a recent trip to England and Sweden with George and Jack. No matter where you went with Peter, you could count on him taking you off the beaten path for more interesting adventures.

A carpenter by trade, he never forgot the value of "measuring twice, cutting once" in both the trade and his many dedicated years representing union members as a Business Representative, and Organizer for Local 83 of the Nova Scotia Carpenters and Joiners of America. Peter spent nearly 30 years with the union both as a carpenter and as a member of the union executive, holding positions such as Financial Secretary, President of Local 83 and as a Trustee for the Atlantic Canada Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights, and Allied workers. Peter was an example of the term "fiduciary."

Peter was also a Trustee for the union benefit and pension plans, and Chairman of both Apprenticeship Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Building Advisory Committee. In 2014, he was awarded the Visionary Award by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association for his dedication to Safety Training on Job Sites. But perhaps his greatest professional legacy was in his passion for trades education resulting in his spending many hours in the formation of the Carpenter Millwright Trades College; serving as Director for the school from its inception to his retirement in the spring of 2014.

Peter always performed his duties at the union with an unwavering commitment to the membership and with a keen sense of overall fairness. He was humble about his professional work, but it was work that made a difference in many people's lives.

But most of all, Peter adored his time with family. We will always remember his upbeat arrival home from what would have likely been a hard day of work with groceries in hand and then their magical transformation into delicious meals. His singing and humming in the kitchen with a meal on the go will be forever remembered. Peter also had an eclectic sense of music; he would listen to Pavarotti in the kitchen, Bob Dylan in the living room, Nina Simone in the dining room, all while singing Ludacris to himself. Weekends in Lunenburg enjoying every moment that our home brought him was an inspiration to us all. In the midst of any renovation or project, he would stop to build us a luge run in the middle of the night or take the time to keep us well fed and entertained. Our home was the hub of the neighbourhood in Lunenburg. He took delight in the memory of Solomon, the boys' school friend from Halifax, waking him up saying "Mr. Greer, Lunenburg is shining. Where are you taking me today"?

None of us will ever make a pie, pasta or pizza again without thinking of how much better his creations were.

Strachan family reunions at Summer Camp on Lake Mooselookmeguntic in Maine were made complete with Peter's presence. He was always up for a day of adventure from climbing a mountain to boating across the lake, but his favourite times were in the kitchen cooking, with ease, for sometimes 25 or more family members. His storytelling around the supper table was unrivaled (especially the drawn out stories about a certain overweight chef).

In 2010, Peter's life changed with a diagnosis of throat cancer requiring a brutal regime of radiation and chemotherapy. Peter met this challenge with his usual braveness and levity, once remarking to a radiation technician "I'm here for my 7:30 tanning session". Those near to him were amazed by his "get this job done" attitude and his remarkable recovery thanks to top-notch medical care from the provincial health care system. However, as is often the case, after being faced with a cancer diagnosis, he was a changed man. The health care system was unable to provide the same level of mental health support that it did for his physical health issue. In memory of Peter, we will all work to ensure meaningful change to this situation.

We could always count on Peter for great songs, laughter, and levity in all of our lives. We hope that we provided that for him and that he finds it wherever his journeys now take him. We wish him peace and love.

A celebration of Peter's life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the West Dublin Community Hall, LaHave, between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m.
